A driver license is in two parts and you need these two parts to have a license. Theory driving tests were introduced in 1996 and you cannot pass your practical driving test until you have completed and passed the theory test. Driving School Amsterdam

The theory test is a written examination that will assess your knowledge and understanding of driving skills and road safety. The authority that sets the theory driving test is called the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

The theory test consists of multiple choice questions and a Hazard perception test. The multiple choices are to assess your understanding of the Highway Code and driving safety knowledge. You are given 57 minutes to answer the questions. It is important that you take your time when reading the questions as you may think you know the answer however it may not be the answer to the question they are asking. If you have prepared well for the theory test you will have time left over at the end to go back and answer the ones that you flagged and were unsure about. It is much better to go through, reading carefully, answering the ones you are certain about and mark the ones you need more time to think about. Otherwise you may spend too much time on one question.

The hazard perception test involves you watching a video clip of a driving scenario and to click to indicate hazards. You are marked by how soon you notice the hazard. You are marked down and disqualified if you simply click repeatedly and continuously.

The great thing about the theory test is you can practice and prepare for the test so that you have the knowledge required and are prepared knowing what will be expected. There are many theory test books that will guide you through what you need to know and also give you example tests to practice. You will also need to learn the Highway Code as these are the fundamental rules that you must abide by when driving. There are also many websites online that allow you to practice your hazard perception test. This will help you with your nerves as you will be experienced in what to expect from the test and the instructions.

You can book your theory test as soon as you are 17 years old. While waiting for the test you can use that time to study the material and practice the tests so that you are fully prepared. It will actually help you with your practical driving lessons as you will have the fundamental knowledge about safety and driving regulations. Both the practical and theory go hand in hand and both will help the other so it is probably best to start taking your driving lessons around the same time as you are doing your theory test. You may start to forget things if you leave a gap of a year or two between your theory and practical driving test. Just remember to prepare as much as you can by studying the material and to not leave it too late that you end up not being able to sit your practical driving test as you have still not passed your theory test.
